This essay is a summary of an article dealing with Coast Salish families and economics, and the role of the potlach in the economy. Coast Salish trade and economics were based almost entirely on family ties. For this reason, marriages were very important. People could trade with thier 'affinals', or people related by marriage. Wealth was redistributed in an equitable way by the potlaches.
